I’m looking into a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse when I turn 18 for my first car. Does anybody have any idea on how much I’m looking at insurance wise per month?

Other cars I’m also looking into are Firebirds, Camaros, Eagle Talons, Mitsubishi 3000 GT
Is the insurance for these cars going to be the same amount?

If all you are going to have is basic liability insurance, the type of car you drive does not matter. You can have a 1985 Yugo GV or a 2007 Ferrari 599, liability rates will be the same.

The actual rate you are charged depends on many, many factors, such as but not limited to: your high school GPA, your parents credit score, how long you have been licensed, any accidents you have been in, which company you go with, whether you pay month to month or 6 months at a time, etc.

This question is asked here a hundred times a day, there are too many factors for anyone other than an insurance agent to give you a quote. The closest thing I can give you to an accurate rate is, when I was 17 I was paying $120 a month for liability…. I got ONE speeding ticket and that amount doubled, and stayed doubled for 2 years.

Having my driving test next month and looking at buying a car soon, either a clio or corsa. I have just got some quotes for a clio and a corsa and all i can say is that its ridiculous! i havent got a quote for less than £10,000!! outrageous!

How are they able to charge so much?

Car insurance companies exist to make a profit. Statistically, young drivers are much more likely to be involved in an accident where the insurance company will have to pay out money. So they discourage it, as there is no profit in insuring young drivers.

I personally think it’s wrong. The only consideration when charging for car insurance could be previous claims. To assume a driver will drive recklessly because they are male or young is prejudice. But discrimination on grounds of sex and age seem to be allowed for insurance companies even though they are banned in the workplace.

I wonder what would happen if they found out that Polish people (for example) caused more accidents than non-Polish people. Should they be allowed to charge Polish-born drivers a higher premium because of this? Of course not!
